What Sets Jesus Apart?
There is no shortage of choices when it comes to faith. Countless deities are worshipped all over the world. And for the most part, the adherents of the various religions are genuine and devout; they are good people who believe that the path they have chosen is the correct one.
From a Christian perspective, Jesus claimed that He was the one and only way to God the Father. In fact, Jesus claimed to be divine Himself, and a sincere seeker of truth should investigate these claims to determine if they are valid or not. But what is it that sets Jesus apart from other gods and religious figures? Here are four truths that separate Jesus from all others:
1. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
The founders of other religions (Buddha, Mohammed, Confucius, etc.) were born and they died, and they stayed dead. But Jesus existed before time began, and He will continue to live into eternity. Yes, He had a human birth and death. But then He rose from the dead and remains alive today.
2. The miracles of Jesus.
In the Qur’an, there are no miracles performed by Mohammed or anyone else. Jesus, on the other hand, performed many miracles. He healed people, exorcized demons, controlled nature, and raised the dead. Many of these miracles were performed in the presence of large groups of people. The reports were not just rumors; there were eyewitnesses. His miracles were common knowledge. This is reflected in the words of Peter on the day of Pentecost:
“People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through Him, as you well know.” (Acts 2:22)
3. Jesus’ generous grace.
Grace is the undeserved mercy of God. Jesus expressed this grace by taking radical steps—the incarnation and the crucifixion—to pay the price for our sinfulness.
Other faiths require a person to earn salvation, liberation, or enlightenment. Only Jesus says, “You couldn’t earn it if you tried, so I’ll do it for you.” It’s that generous grace of Jesus that offers forgiveness and hope.
You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that by His poverty He could make you rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)
“We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 15:11)
4. Jesus’ loving relationship with His people.
In Islam, there is no expression of love from Allah toward his people; only a strict set of rules and warnings of punishment. In Buddhism, there’s not much of a concept of God at all, let alone a loving God.
Jesus is different. Jesus loved humanity so much that He came to this planet. He revealed Himself in a personal way. Christianity is not about moral laws or religious practices; it is about having a relationship with the living Savior, Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul wrote:
Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with Him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with Himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. (Philippians 3:8-10)
That kind of growing, vibrant, loving relationship with Jesus is the center of the Christian faith. More than anything else, it sets Jesus apart from every other religion and belief system in the world.
